The Former East Gate of the Town
At the junction of Chapel Lane and Main Street a very substantial protective gate stood across Main Street until the first decade of the 19th Century. The scope of present records is unable to determine whether it was surviving remnant of medieval town wall or an ornamental feature built at the behest of Earl of Essex or the Grand Jury. It is depicted on the map by Francis Plunket 1736 and Rev. Daniel Beaufort map of 1808, but it did not survive up to the Ordnance Survey maps of 1838.
